Police Search Is On For Suspect In Robbery
An armed robbery that occurred Saturday morning at a check cashing business in
Jasper has Detectives with the Jasper Police Department still conducting an
investigation.
Jasper Police Chief Bobby Cain says that a man wearing a mask and brandishing a
handgun entered the Chek-N-Go in the Jasper Square Shopping Center around 10:37

Cain says that the robbery suspect then tied both female employees, robbed them
and fled the scene. Neither of the women were reported injured during the
robbery.
Cain says the suspect is a black male, with a dark complexion, about 6’2” tall
and weighing approximately 190 to 200 pounds.
Anyone with any informtion regarding the Chek-N-Go robbery is being asked to

Jasper Board Of Education Agrees To Change Freshman
Requirements
At Monday's monthly meeting the Jasper Board of Education
approved a state-mandated change to high school diploma requirements for all
incoming freshmen.
The new guidelines require that freshmen entering high school will be required
to pursue the Advanced Diploma, which requires two foreign language classes and
Algebra II.
Students must prove that they cannot meet the Advanced Diploma requirements
before opting out to a basic diploma.
In addition, board members voted to raise pay standards for substitute lunchroom
workers and custodians.
Substitute lunchroom workers now will be paid $40 per standard six-hour shift,
with substitute custodians being paid $53 for an eight-hour shift.
The substitute lunchroom staff was previously paid $36 per day while substitute
custodians were previously paid $50 per day.
Sparkman also recognized Memorial Park teacher Beth Able and Walker High teacher
Beth Kennedy for their efforts in writing grants to the Education Excellence
Foundation, which is a fund established to benefit the Jasper City School System
through a partnership with the Walker Area Community Foundation.
Able says that she plans to use the $1,000 grant that she received to take her
students’ artwork out into the community.
Kennedy said the grant she applied for on behalf of the Walker High Science
Department will be used to update equipment for the upper level science classes.
