Billy Ray Serratt, 51, of Quinton died Wednesday, July 15, 2009,
at Baptist Medical Center Princeton. Arrangements will be announced later by
Bell Funeral Home Sumiton.
Debra Guinell Freeman Moore, 50,
of Corner
Debra Guinell Freeman Moore, 50, of Corner, was carried to her
new home by our Lord and Savior on July 15, 209, at 6:34 p.m. She was surrounded
by her loving family as the angels watched over, guarded and comforted, until it
was time for our loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister to see the
face of Jesus who extended his loving arms and said, “My child you have fought
the fight with cancer, kept the faith, run the course and now its time for you
to come home.” As the sun was setting she took hold of her Lord’s hand and
crossed over into the joys of heaven.
Homegoing celebrations will be Saturday, July 18, 2009, at 1 p.m. at
Collins-Burke Chapel in Jasper. Visitation will be today, July 17, 2009, from 6
until 9 p.m. at Collins-Burke Funeral Home. Interment will be at Arkdelphia
Cemetery on County Road 91 in Cullman County. The Rev. Todd Hunter and the Rev.
Phillip Starnes will officiate. Collins-Burke Funeral Home will direct.
Debra was preceded in death by her father, the Rev. Hershel Dearl Freeman;
mother-in-law, Reanie Moore; father-in-law, Howard Moore; grandparents, William
Floyd and Ethel Mae (Voss) Latham and John “Blind Bud” and Dora Ethel (Bowling)
Freeman.
She is survived by her loving husband, children, grandchildren, mother and
brother, Douglas Moore, Jeremy Moore, Brittney Brook Moore, Damien Shane Moore,
Steven Anthony Moore, Evelyn C. (Latham) Freeman and Dennis Freeman.
Fred S. McCollum, 89
Fred S. McCollum, 89, died Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at the
Mississippi State Veterans Home in Oxford, Miss.
Born in Winston County, McCollum had lived in the Oxford area since 1983 when he
and his family moved there from Alabama. A U.S. Army veteran, he had served in
World War II and was retired from BellSouth as a switchman.
McCollum was a lifetime member of the American Legion, a Shriner, a Mason and a
member of the First Baptist Church of Abbeville.
Visitation will be held today, July 17, 2009, from noon until 3 p.m. at Coleman
Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held today, July 17, 2009, at 3 p.m. in
the Garden of Memories located at Coleman Funeral Home, with Bro. Randy Hope and
Bro. Hilton Lane officiating. Coleman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Ella W. McCollum of Abbeville, Miss.; one son, Steve
McCollum (Susan) of Abbeville, Miss.; two sisters, Virgie Lee Hughes of
Birmingham and Imagene Yonkers of Pell City; one brother, Keith McCollum of Pell
City; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Abbeville, Miss. 38601.
James Burvel Bland, 78, of Dora
James Burvel Bland, 78, of the Corner community in Dora passed
away Thursday, July 16, 2009, at Walker Baptist Medical Center. He was an Army
veteran and retired from Automatic Sprinkler.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 18, 2009, in the New Horizon
Memorial Chapel with burial in McCormack Cemetery. The Rev. Donnell Brown will
officiate. New Horizon Memorial Funeral Home will direct. Visitation will be
Saturday from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil H. Bland and Hazel Cole Bland;
sister, Ruby Bland Phillips; and brother-in-law, the Rev. Felton Phillips.
His survivors include his sisters, Marie Sandlin (Winford) of Jasper, Carolyn
Speigle (Nelson) of Birmingham, Emogene Cantley (Jim) of Pelham; and brothers,
Joseph D. Bland (Shirley) of Adamsville, Charles K. Bland (Gwen) of Dora, and
Raymond Bland (Marie) of Remlap.
Pallbearers will be Robert Bland, Larry Bland, Nelson Speigle, Jim Cantley,
Matthew Cantley, Josh Thompson and Cole McCoy. Honorary Pallbearers will be Roy
Drummond, Johnny Stewart, Jonathan Bland, Olie C. Bailely, and Winford Sandlin.

Milton L. “Milt” O’Barr, 85,
formerly of Jasper
Milton L. “Milt” O’Barr, 85, formerly of Jasper, passed away
peacefully at his home in Strawberry Plains, Tenn., with his family by his side
on Thursday, July 16, 2009.
Milt was a veteran of WWII serving from 1941 to 1945 with the 85th Engineer
Heavy Ponton Battalion. He earned five battle stars having served his country in
North Africa, Italy, France, and Germany, engaging in five major campaigns in
the Europeon Theatre of Operations. After the war, Milt was employed by Southern
Bell Telephone Company, later becoming South Central Bell, from which he retired
in 1985 after 38 years of service. For over 30 years, Milt was a member of
Jasper First Church of the Nazarene where he served on the church board, choir,
bus ministry, and taught sunday school.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Armold and Ardecia O'Barr;
and brothers and sisters, Kenneth O'Barr, J. C. O'Barr, Ola Mae Hamm, Stella
Travis, and Donald O'Barr.
Milt is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth “Libby” Lindsey O’Barr; son,
Rod O'Barr and his wife Kathy; son, Ken O'Barr; grandchildren, Kristopher and
Shelley O'Barr; twin brother, Melvin O'Barr and his wife Jane; sister-in-law,
Lucille O'Barr; and a host of dearly loved nieces and nephews. We would like to
express our heartfelt thanks to hospice and in particular, hospice aide Florence
Rancher.
Friends will be received Saturday, July 18, from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. at
Kilgore-Green Funeral Home Chapel with the service following at 1 p.m., the Rev.
Willett Vess officiating. Burial will be immediately following at Oak Hill
Cemetary. Kilgore-Green Funeral Home directing.
Pall bearers will be Scott Brown, Keith Bryant, Jake Gosa, Fred O'Barr,
Kristopher O'Barr, and Cecil Travis.

Thomas Chester Ford Sr., 69, of Cordova died
Thursday, July 16, 2009, at his residence. Funeral services will

today, July 17, from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
He was preceded in death by his son, Garry Ford; father, James
Lester “Leck” Ford; mother, Lois Ford; and brothers James “Tina”
Ford, Fred Earley, and George Earley.
