Arthur Samuel Farley, 80, of Arley

Arthur Samuel Farley, 80, of Arley, died Friday, July 17, 2009, at his residence. Funeral services will be Sunday, July 19, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Living Waters Church with burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Dennis Farley will officiate. Collins-Burke Funeral Home will direct. Visitation will be at 6 p.m. today, July 18, at the funeral home and from 10 until 11 a.m. the Sunday at the church.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Theo Farley; son, Daniel Arthur Farley; daughter, Debra Hayes; and granddaughter, April Brawner.

He is survived by his five sons, Donny Farley (Paula), Tony Farley, Darrel Farley (Carmen), Dennis Farley (Leah) and Dean Farley (Kay); two sisters, Hazel Barnett and Oalerde Ford; brothers, Other Farley, Roger Farley, Tillmon Farley; 13 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Billy Ray Serratt, 51, of Quinton, died Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at Baptist Medical Center Princeton. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, July 18, 2009, at Dugg Hill Cemetery in Oak Grove. Visitation was at 6 p.m. Friday, July 17, at the funeral home. Bell Funeral Home Sumiton is handling arrangements on behalf of the family.

James Burvel Bland, 78, of Dora (Corner)

James Burvel Bland, 78, of Dora (Corner) passed away Thursday, July 16, 2009, at Walker Baptist Medical Center.

He was an Army Veteran and retired from Automatic Sprinkler. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today, July 18, 2009, in the New Horizon Memorial Chapel with burial in McCormack Cemetery. Rev. Donnell Brown officiating. New Horizon Memorial Funeral Home of Dora directing. Visitation will be today from 12:30 until 2 p.m. at the funeral home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil H. Bland and Hazel Cole Bland and sister, Ruby Bland Phillips and her husband Felton Phillips.

His survivors include his sisters, Marie Sandlin (Winfred) of Jasper, Carolyn Speigle (Nelson) of Birmingham, Emogene Cantley (Jim) of Pelham; brothers, Joseph D. Bland (Shirley) of Adamsville, Charles K. Bland (Gwen) of Dora, Raymond Bland (Marie) of Remlap.

Pallbearers will be Robert Bland, Larry Bland, Nelson Speigle, Jim Cantley, Matthew Cantley, Josh Thompson and Cole McCoy. Honorary pallbearers will be Roy Drummond, Johnny Stewart, Jonathan Bland, Olie C. Bailely, and Winford Sandlin.


Jean Elizabeth Powell, 82, of Jasper

Jean Elizabeth Powell, 82, of Jasper, died Thursday, July 16, 2009, at UAB Medical Center in Birmingham. Funeral services will be Sunday, July 19, at 2 p.m. in Collins-Burke Chapel with burial in Walker Memory Gardens. Kerry Cleghorn and Greg Story. Collins-Burke Funeral Home will direct. Visitation will be today from 6 until 8 p.m. today, July 18, at the funeral home.

She was preceded in death by her father, Hugh M. Abel; mother, Velma L. Abel; and brother, Carl D. Abel.

She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, John T. Powell Jr. of Jasper; sisters, Laura Randolph of Lynn and Martha Jones of Summerville, S.C.; brothers, Lynn “Buddy” Abel (Marlene) of Cordova, Howard Abel (Violet) of Northport, James T. Abel (Ann) of Jasper, and Fred Ablel (Lura) of Cullman; and many loving nieces and nephews.


Malah Jane Bell, 70, of Quinton

Malah Jane Bell, 70, of Quinton passed away Thursday, July 16, 2009, at Baptist Medical Center Princeton.

Mrs. Bell was a member of Sumiton First Assembly of God.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, July 19, 2009, in the New Horizon Memorial Chapel with burial to follow in Shanghi Cemetery. The Rev. Dewayne Barrett will officiate. New Horizon Memorial Funeral Home in Dora direct.

Visitation will be Sunday 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Bell; brothers; J.C. Stevens and William Stevens; sisters, Equalla Edgeworth and Willodean Allred.

Her survivors include her daughter, Sharon Lyle and husbnd Bobby of Quinton; grandson, Brandon Lyle of Quinton; sister, Imogene Dollar of Quintown and several nieces and nephews.
