Mary Ellen Holley

Mary Ellen Holley, 83, of Parrish, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2010, at Walker Baptist Medical Center in Jasper. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010, at Collins-Burke Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at Zion Church of Christ Cemetery in Parrish. Scott McCown and Levi Sides will officiate. Visitation will be from 9 until 11 a.m. Saturday at Collins-Burke Funeral Home Chapel.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellis Howard Holley; parents, William and Velma Boshell.

She is survived by her daughter, Teresa Kitchens (James) of Parrish; sons, Philip David Holley (Kristi) of Hobart, Okla., and Joe Holley (Gayla) of Lexington; grandchildren, John Holley (Tracy), Andy Holley (Melissa), Carleigh Holley, Lindsey Kitchens, Cavan Holley and Caleb Kitchens; and three great-grandchildren.

The family asks that memorial contributions be made to Parrish Church of Christ, P.O. Box 118 Parrish , AL 35580


Jewel Dean McDaniel

Jewel Dean McDaniel, 77, of Jasper passed away Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010, at her residence. Funeral services will be at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 15, 2010, at Collins-Burke Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at Walker Memory Gardens. Bro. Waymon Ashley and Bro. Tony German will officiate. Visitation will be today, Oct. 14, 2010, from 6 until 9 p.m. at Collins-Burke Funeral Home Parlor.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rillard McDaniel; son, Richard Earl McDaniel; grandson, Gregory Byron McDaniel; and mother, Nettie Heflin.

She is survived by her daughters, Sandra Franks (Albert) of Jasper, Patricia Kaye Porter (Dewayne) of Russellville, Connie Sides (Mike) of Jasper, Amy McDaniel of Haleyville and Misty McDaniel of Jasper; sons, Scott McDaniel (Connie) of Carbon Hill and Steven Wade McDaniel of Nauvoo; grandchildren, Kenneth Franks, Eric Franks, Heather Kelly, Michael Sides, David Olivas McDaniel, Adam McDaniel, Josh McDaniel, Jeremy McDaniel and Jason McDaniel; great-grandchildren, Kayla Grace, Tori Pace, Jessica Grace, Brody Washington, Alexis Johnson, Ethan Johnson, Ashley McDaniel, Haley Kelly, Zack Kelly, Draven Franks, Aleha Franks and Sherrenda Franks.

Era Phillips

Era Phillips, 94, of Dora, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2010. Funeral services will be 11a.m. Friday, Oct. 15, 2010, at Bell Sumiton Chapel with burial in McCormack Cemetery. The Rev. Doug Tate will officiate. Visitation will be from 6:30 until 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Bell Funeral Home Sumiton will direct.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew J. Phillips; granddaughter; Debra Ritch; and great-grandson, Daniel Hodges.

Mrs. Phillips is survived by her daughter, Katy Dooley and husband Rusty; and Betty Cranford and husband Bill; one son, Marzell “Andy” Phillips and wife Charlette; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren; one brother and one sister; a host of nieces and nephews; as well as several care takers that were like family to her from Cordova Health and Rehab, where she had lived for the past three years.

Edna Merle Garner Craft

Edna Merle Garner Craft, an icon of strength and love, passed away Monday, Oct. 11, 2010, in her home after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Following her retirement from Kern County General Services in Bakersfield, Calif., she returned to her home in Berry. Her highest calling was being a mother and friend to anyone who needed her and she was always generous with her time for both people and animals, wanting to take all “strays” home with her.

Merle was a memeber of Berry United Methodist Church, as well as very active in Philadelphia Baptist Church, another church family very dear to her. A woman of deep faith, she lived this faith daily showing all who met her the meaning of unconditional love.

Merle is survived by her beloved husband, Don Craft, and their extended family of children, Dianne Baily, Donald Baily (Anita), Denise Turner (Donnie), all of Berry, Pam Akery (Ricky) of Bakersfield, Calif., Andy Craft (Diana) of Berry, Thomas Craft of Bakersfield, Calif., Matthew Collins of Lackland Air Force Base of Dallas, Texas, Connie Bond of Berry, Anthony Ayala of Las Vegas, Nev., Joey Goodman, Amanda Goodman, and Charles Goodman of Bakersfield, Calif. In their capacity as foster parents for more than 25 years, she and Don provided a home for many others not listed here. She was “Mom” to each and every one. She is also survived by a special aunt, Loyal Baker of Oakman.

Merle is preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Mildred Garner, siblings, Wayne Garner, Wynell Cook, Wilfred Garner and Shirley Ann Cannon.

Lola Satterfield, 74, of Jasper, passed away Friday, Oct. 8, 2010, at Walker Baptist Medical Center. Funeral services will be at noon Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010, at the Greater Shiloh Baptist Church in Jasper. The Rev. Alex Washington will officiate. Burial will be at Gay Reed Cemetery in Jasper. Mildred L. “Sister” Roberts Thomas

Mildred L. “Sister” Roberts Thomas, 86, of Sumiton, passed away Monday, Oct. 11, 2010, at her residence. She was a member of Sumiton Church of God. Funeral services will be Friday, Oct. 15, 2010, at 2 p.m. in the New Horizon Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the McCormack Cemetery. The Rev. James Hockensmith will officiate. Visitation will be today, Oct. 14 from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles R. and Pearl Fowler Roberts; and brother, Charles D. “Sonny” Roberts.

Her survivors include her daughters, Charlie Ann Phillips Vines (Elden Meeder), Nancy Phillips Cooper and Janet Phillips Brakefield; grandsons, Roger Dale Brakefield, Larry Wayne Brakefield, Keith Vines and Michael Vines; 10 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; nieces, Linda Roberts Thursby, Martha Leigh Roberts White and lifelong companion, Vernie Robinson.
